"Kathy's" Psychedelic Experience

Written by Tonya Laden

This is a story about "Kathy," a retiree with PTSD and "Edward," a mushroom-aware therapists. Permission has been granted by both parties to share this experience here.

After an 18-year career in medicine, "Kathy" struggled with severe anxiety and job-related PTSD. Despite psychotherapy and prescription medications, "Kathy" was debilittated by her symptoms and had lost hope.

SOSS™ Mushrooms connected "Kathy," the retiree with PTSD and "Edward," the aformentionded therapist for a consultation. "Kathy" decided to do a Mushroom Assisted Therapy Journey so, together they had preperation sessions to fully understand her history and set clear intentions. Her primary goals were relief from her disabling anxiety and PTSD.

During her 7-hour journey, Kathy revisited key moments from her life and became aware that her anxiety stemmed from her father being deployed during the Vietnam War when she was four years old. She unconsciously took on the responsibility of holding her Mother and younger sister together while her father was away. During the experience, she was able to release this burden and compassionately tell her younger self, “You’re not responsible.”

In the integration sessions, "Kathy" has learned how to quickly and kindly respond to the anxiety that shows up in her body and has a more compassionate relationship with herself and reports feeling calmer, more present, and better able to enjoy her retirement and daily life.
